We all know the phrase “spring cleaning,” but few people talk about the ever important “summer maintenance.” It may not be as catchy, but from our staff here at FS Construction Services, we can promise you it’s just as important. So with the summer in full swing, we figured it would be a good time to talk about some of the simple building summer maintenance you can perform during these months (while still holding a cool drink in your hand).
Simple Building Summer Maintenance Tips
If there’s anything we can say about the weather in the Midwest is that it’s hardly temperate. It likes to sprint from extreme to extreme and that takes a toll on buildings. So be sure to check on anything that hinges, closes, opens, or moves. Check for sticking locks on doors and windows and clear out any drain channels that have gotten cluttered.
Depending on the makeup of your building, you may need to set the drink down for this one, but check for any signs of pests, both of the mammal and insect variety. Check columns, splashboards, eaves, and any attic spaces for termites, carpenter ants, or other pests that like to wreak havoc on wood. Additionally, keep an eye out for hornet or wasp nests, especially under the eaves. If you look early and you check back throughout the summer, you can prevent any pests going undeterred for long stretches of time.
After any period of intense weather, be it winter, spring, or summer storms, be sure to go around the exterior of your building and check your siding and trim for scratches, holes, dents, or gaps. If you can, check your roof for any branches or debris. Remove anything that needs to cleaned up and make any repairs needed.
Like anything, a little maintenance here and there goes a long way towards preventing future problems down the road.
