This month we decided to run two Employee Profiles, since we have two long-term employees who are retiring soon. So we are pleased to introduce you to Paul Joost, whose primary role with FS Construction Services has been as a carpenter, though he has regularly also worked with garage doors, grain bins, and more.
Paul Joost Background Helps Customers
Like so many of our employees, and so many of the farmers we work with, Paul learned the value of hard work at a young age. As a child, he began sacking groceries at the Steeleville store that had been in his family since the 1930s. After high school, Paul worked for a printing press that printed magazines and comic books. During that time, Paul’s dad got him interested in carpentry and he eventually took a job in Carbondale as a custom cabinet maker. A decade later, Paul moved back to Steeleville and began working as a residential contractor. Another decade after that, in 2010, he began working for Gateway FS.
For the past 14 years, he has brought his meticulous sense of detail and wide skillset to our company, and most importantly, the clients we serve. For most of his time with us, Paul has worked with the same foreman and crew, and during that time they have built up a lot of trust and can begin work quickly and efficiently.
While many of the people have stayed the same, the construction process has changed a bit over the years. The biggest change, as Paul puts it, has come with the shift from scaffold wagons to scissor and platform lifts. Not only is the work easier, and the job made quicker, they’re much safer as well. Which is a plus when most of your work happens off the ground.
People don’t always have the opportunity to find a career doing what they love, but in Paul’s words, “I’ve always loved building things. Throughout my whole adult life. So I really do enjoy my time getting to work on building projects and construction.” We will talk more about Paul’s retirement next month, but it’s hard to think of a better career summary than that.
