We are excited to continue our Employee Profile series on Joe Dorn, a longtime employee of FS Construction Services and a man who, even approaching retirement, has never stopped learning. While discussing previous projects that Joe has worked on with us, a regular theme came up again and again: problem solving.

Perhaps this is nowhere more apparent than some of the overhead door installations Joe has done over the years, where there can be up to 1,200 different variations of wire diagrams to work with. And while this might be enough to make someone else throw up their hands and walk away, Joe’s response to challenges like these is, “it was complex, but fun at the same time.”
One of the more unique projects Joe has worked on involved a client who turned their grain bin into a guest house, complete with indoor sauna. And if that wasn’t enough, the roof of the old grain bin was turned into a patio with a slide that went down into their pool.
While it’s hard to say how many grain-bin-pool-slides we’re going to have an opportunity to work on in the future, Joe’s engineering mind allows him to problem solve in the moment and come up with solutions quickly. And in our line of work, the applications for this kind of talent never end.
Recently, Joe was tasked with installing a 20 ft. wide garage door on an older building that wasn’t constructed to accommodate such a large door. The solution involved maneuvering a large overhead steel beam into place so that it could support both the structure and the door. Perhaps one the of the things we admire most, and will miss the most about Joe, is that he doesn’t lament these challenges, he embraces them, and then he solves them. And when you find someone like that, all you can do is appreciate getting to watch someone master their craft.
