Metal Building Maintenance in Cold Weather

Well, we hate to be the ones to have to do this, but it’s time to talk about cold weather and metal building maintenance. We know there’s a chance you’re reading this on a reasonably warm, sunny day where winter still seems like a distant reality. But of course, being located in Illinois, we here at FS Construction Services know that there’s also a chance you’re reading this while it’s snowing outside. In any case, colder months are coming, so it’s best to be prepared for it.

Tips for Cold Weather Metal Building Maintenance

Here are some things to keep in mind for metal building maintenance during the fall and winter months:

Roof inspection

We’ve had months of rain, wind, and sometimes flying tree branches. Now is the time to have someone inspect the condition of your roof. Replace broken shingles or panels and make sure all your flashing is securely installed.

While you’re up there… check those gutters

Clean out gutter channels, especially while those leaves are falling, and make sure water isn’t trapped inside anywhere. Be sure to replace any broken gutters or downspouts.

Foundation inspection

Keep an eye out for any damage, especially water damage. Check any grading around your building to make sure the dirt is still graded to drain water away from the foundation.

Check for pests, both leafy and legged

Cut back any vegetation that might be up against your building and roof. If you do have to spray for weeds, make sure you don’t spray it on any of your steel panels. Keep your eye out for any pests that have burrowed or tried to make their home near your building.

Insulate and lubricate

Check for deteriorated insulation or weather stripping around doors and windows, between foundation and siding, and any place where the bricks and the wood are in contact. If you have an attic space, you can also check the depth of your insulation to make sure it is sufficient. Additionally, lubricate any door and window hinges, including garage doors.

Protect pipes

And finally, check any pipes that might have exposure to extreme cold and insulate them if necessary. You can also cover any outdoor water faucets.
