Pole Barn Lifespans: How Long Will They Last?

Perhaps you’ve never asked yourself the age-old question How long do pole barns last? Here at FS Construction Services, we like to think there are few questions more fundamental than this one, but just in case you’ve never wondered, we’ve decided that we’re going to ask it for you. And then we’re going to answer it. So: How long do pole barns last?

What are Pole Barn Lifespans?

Well, it depends. But if you had to put a range to it, your best bet would be somewhere within 40-60 years. That doesn’t mean that it can’t last longer. With proper care and maintenance, your pole barn could last 70, 80, even 100 years. And naturally, with improper care and serious neglect, it’s possible your structure won’t make it to the 40 year mark.

One of the benefits of pole barns is their simplicity. The steel used in the cladding is largely protected from the elements and will generally hold up well over time. The biggest weak point from a longevity standpoint is the wooden posts. Now if they were set into concrete when the building was constructed and have been inspected and maintained since then, then you’re on your way to enjoying your pole barn for many more years to come. However, if the posts were set without concrete, were untreated, or have not been regularly inspected, then there is a good chance that the wood has experienced rot or damage, likely reducing the structure’s lifespan.

But the good news is that with some regular upkeep, your pole barn investment should last you for a long time.
