Residential Garage Door Safety

When it comes to garage doors around here at FS Construction Services, we often sound like a broken record. Your garage door is an incredible functioning luxury you tend to forget about until it stops doing what it’s supposed to, and then it becomes a huge headache. So we thought we would provide you with some garage door safety suggestions and thoughts for keeping your door in good working order and keeping yourself and others safe around it.

Keep Your Door Working Well with Garage Door Safety Tips

Springs, Cables, and Tracks

A garage door has a lot of moving parts, and those parts work the same path and track over and over again. Your garage door stretches its springs every time it opens and closes, and the same principle is true for the door’s cables and tracks. That’s a lot of work over a week, a month, a year. Light maintenance like cleaning and lubrication can help keep things in proper order, but be sure to leave any repairs or major adjustments to the professionals. Doors are heavy and can cause serious injury if mishandled.

Emergency Release

Take a minute to familiarize yourself with your garage door’s emergency release mechanism. You will thank us if you do this now, and not when you’re fumbling around in the dark after the power goes out and you need to open the door.

Photosensors and Auto-Reverse

Two of the most basic safety features of a garage door are also two of its most important. The photosensors will prevent the door from closing on anything in the door’s path. Make sure they’re pointed in the right direction and clear of debris. The auto-reverse mechanism will reverse your door’s direction if it comes in contact with an object (i.e., a car, a pet, a person, etc.).

Push Buttons and Common Sense

Like we said, garage doors are heavy. While most garage doors, especially newer ones, come with a variety of safety features, nothing beats simple common sense. Keep your garage door openers and push buttons out of reach of children, or even accidental pressing. And more than anything, make sure you’re always out of the way of a moving door.
