Rather than requiring a traditional foundation (or even a full slab), a pole barn is built by securing structural poles into concrete in the ground. This means your floor can be dirt, wood, concrete, or pretty much whatever you want. In some cases, people choose to keep a dirt floor initially and add flooring later. Whatever the case, this makes the construction and material costs much lower than other types of buildings.
Because the structural columns are at the perimeter of the building, a pole barn also doesn’t require interior structural walls. This means your building can have large, clear spans, which is particularly great if part of your reason for planning a pole barn is to store large equipment. All of this lends itself to quicker construction and lower construction costs.
