FSCS Construction Services FSCS painting employee Brian Boomer Garleb

FSCS Painting Employee Profile: Brian “Boomer” Garleb

If you have ever needed any paint work done and reached out to us here at FS Construction Services, then you are familiar with Brian “Boomer” Garleb. As we continue our Employee Profile series, we figured we probably shouldn’t go too long without talking about Boomer and his role in FSCS painting services.

Brian Garleb: FSCS Painting Services Leader

Boomer has been a staple with us here since 1991 when he joined us as a truck driver. Towards the end of ’91 Boomer started up our paint division with a 100’ hose, a 54’ boom truck, a flatbed, a 500-gallon plastic water carrier, and one power sprayer. His first paint job was April 7, 1992, at St. John Lutheran School in Red Bud, IL.

Boomer worked hard over the next eight years to grow the services he offered, the capabilities he had, and the equipment he used. By 2001, Boomer had grown the paint division from a brand-new business of zero dollars to a Southern Illinois painting enterprise that works on interiors, exteriors, residential projects, commercial, metal roofs, metal buildings, and so on.

Today, Boomer has added some employees and seriously upgraded his equipment (more on that another month), but he still approaches each job with the same enthusiasm he brought with him over 30 years ago. Perhaps nothing says it better than Boomer’s own words, “I just wanna do a good job.”

In his spare time, Boomer likes to hunt, fish, and spend time with his son, AJ, and his wife, Susanne. Boomer and Susanne were married in 2000 because, as Boomer says, it makes doing the math of how long they’ve been married very easy. Boomer got his nickname at age four because of his boundless energy. We’re grateful that his boundless energy remains to this day. In fact, if you call our office asking for Brian, you may get a moment’s silence and then the question, “Do you mean Boomer?”

If you are in need of paint services, or have any related questions, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services commercial garage door maintenance tips

Your Commercial Garage Door Maintenance

So you’ve got a brand new garage door and you want to keep it in top working shape as long you possibly can. Or perhaps you have an older door that you’re trying to squeeze another month or year out of it before you finally upgrade. Either way, there are a handful of fairly simple things you can do to keep your garage door in good working order and prevent inconveniences, unnecessary bills, or malfunctions. Here are a few tips for your commercial garage door maintenance:

Commercial Garage Door Maintenance Tips

Cleaning

This may seem obvious or perhaps unimportant, but keeping your garage door clean can prevent buildup, mildew, and other potential issues. Mix five gallons of water with a cup of soap and gently clean your door’s exterior. You can also use this mixture to clean your door’s weather stripping.

Lubricating

Use a garage door-specific oil or 10W30 motor oil on your door’s rollers, roller shafts, and hinges. This will keep your rollers operating smoothly and prevent strong lurches and jolts. Nylon rollers are self-lubricated, so be sure to check if your door has those. If so, don’t lubricate them. Every couple months, you can use a silicone-based lubricant on your door’s weather stripping. Don’t use petroleum-based lubricant.

Balancing

To check your door’s balance, disconnect it from the operator. Raise and lower the door by hand. This way you can check the door at all levels for balance and ideal operation.

Inspecting

Your door’s track alignment should be at least a minimum of 3/8” from the door’s edge. While you are inspecting the track alignment, you can make sure that the back angle and sway braces are still tightened and securely fastened.

If you have other garage door issues or if more significant maintenance is required, be sure to call a professional to help. If you are looking to purchase a new garage door, whether for a commercial or residential application, or if you need a new opener, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services Alicia Easter Inventory employee profile

Employee Profile: Alicia Easter – Inventory

The last two months we have enjoyed the opportunity to focus on Alicia Easter and discuss some of the incredible work she does for us here at FS Construction Services. And while her coworkers like to say that she does “everything!” around the office, we are just going to focus on one final aspect of her job duties this month: inventory.

Inventory Key Part of Alicia Easter’s Position

Depending on who you are, “inventory” may sound like an exciting task ahead or it might sound like a unique punishment designed specifically for you. Fortunately for us, Alicia’s team-first attitude, her overall insight into our general operations, and her detail-oriented mind, make her an ideal choice to assist with our inventory process.

Alicia works with Linde (formerly Praxair) on orders and inventory. This dovetails nicely with her customer service responsibilities, where Alicia is able to help make efficient product exchanges for customers when needed. Additionally, Alicia provides a significant amount of overall in-person inventory management. So not only is she helping account for individual projects’ costs and timelines, she is helping us account for what items are in our warehouse and what might need to be ordered next.

While this part of the job is behind-the-scenes, the impact to our customers is undeniable. But for Alicia, all of these individual responsibilities work towards the same goal at the end of the day. Or as she says, “Customer service is all about listening to what the need is and helping address it.”

We are grateful to have Alicia helping us in both visible and less visible ways. Because it ultimately all helps us provide the best possible experience for our customers, and we couldn’t imagine anyone who embodies that better than Alicia Easter.

Gateway FS Construction Services steel building for farm storage

Five Benefits of a Steel Building for Farm Storage

Here at FS Construction Services, we are grateful to be living in a time when engineering and technology have gotten to be so good and efficient, that whether you ultimately choose a steel or a wood building for agricultural use, either way you end up with a dependable, useful structure that should last you for a long time. That being said, you might be saying to yourself, “I’ve still got to choose one. So which one should I go for?” So we thought we’d take a little time to discuss some of the unique benefits that a steel building provides, especially a steel building for farm storage.

A Steel Building for Farm Storage Advantage

Cost Over Time

A steel building might cost you a little more up front, but over time, you’re likely to make back that investment. Steel buildings are unbeaten in their durability and longevity.

Convenience

One of the great benefits of steel is the ability to have a building with clear, unbroken spans of space. This is particularly necessary for storing or moving large farm equipment, but having the uninterrupted space can provide a number of other conveniences and efficiencies that you don’t get with support pillars.

Lower Maintenance

Of course, no building is no maintenance, but low maintenance is possible. With steel, you don’t have to bother with re-painting, and you don’t have to worry about mold, termites, or fire damage.

Protection

Speaking of fire damage, steel buildings also allow for great wind and impact resistance. So if you are living in a place where the weather can get rough, the strength of steel will provide some peace of mind.

Options

Steel buildings are often very customizable, from colors to styles to layout. If you have a specific or unique requirement, you will find that opting for a steel building might provide you the options you need.

If you are looking at a new building, and would like to talk to steel or wood, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services metal roof maintenance

Metal Roof Maintenance 101

If you’ve followed us here at FS Construction Services for any length of time, then you know that we love a good metal roof. Not only do they come in a number of attractive colors, but they have unmatched durability, last far longer than traditional roofs, and are relatively easy to maintain, which is great news if you have an aversion to ladders.

Roof Maintenance of Metal is Easiest

That being said, there is still some maintenance required if you own a metal roof, so we will talk here about what that requires. That way, you can decide if it’s going to be you or someone else going up on the roof.

Surface Maintenance

This is pretty self-explanatory, but you will want to do a quick pass over the roof to check for debris, stuck leaves, sticks, and branches. While you’re up there, you might as well take the time to clean out the gutters as well. Be sure to clean off any dirt or mildew with a gentle brush and water or detergent. Avoid abrasive brushes, power washers, and harsh chemicals. While metal roofs generally resist the erosion and deterioration shingle roofs experience, you will still want to make sure that the roof isn’t getting scraped by branches or in contact with any foreign materials (things like copper, brick, iron, and concrete can introduce elements into the metal that can corrode it over time).

Structural Maintenance

This type of maintenance is more involved, and usually requires a professional’s help. While metal roofs are strong, extreme wind, heat, or cold, hail, excessive rain, or regular temperature fluctuations can all take a toll over time. It’s generally a good idea to have your roof inspected every couple years for things like: broken or missing fasteners, rivets, or screws, loose or separated seams and flashing, or sealant that needs to be replaced. Additionally, if a large enough object falls hard enough and high enough, it can puncture the roof.

With these things in mind, hopefully you feel comfortable making the right maintenance decision and keeping your roof looking pristine for many more years to come.

If you are interested in discussing metal roof options, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services Alicia Easter customer service accounting

Employee Profile: Alicia Easter – Accounting and More

Last month we turned our employee profile focus towards Alicia Easter, Administrative Aide and all-around Jack of all trades at FS Construction Services. Alicia works closely with multiple teams within our office to provide assistance, oversight, accounting and customer service.

Accounting to Customer Service: Alicia Easter Does It All

While Alicia loves problem solving, answering questions, and making sure our customers’ expectations are being met, her behind-the-scenes work is equally integral to our success here. None of our work with our clients means much if we can’t keep an accurate account of everything. Thankfully, this is another area where Alicia provides help and expertise. Whether it’s general accounting work, working with manufacturers to secure the best prices, working with our sales team to make sure those prices transfer to our customers, or keeping track of the additional costs involved in each project (dumpsters, port-a-potties, etc.), Alicia helps keep us on track internally and externally. Additionally, Alicia oversees the billing for our paint team and helps with orders, inventory, and product exchanges.

While her schedule is certainly full, Alicia always has a good-natured and optimistic outlook on the work we do. “The job is really fulfilling. Knowing that we do a good job for our customers and taking care of those customers. We have a great team and we have each other’s backs.”

Similar to the customer-first approach we talked about last month, Alicia also carries a team-first approach. She works hard to uplift those around her and provide help wherever it’s needed. In her words, “Everybody is always open to helping everybody else.” It’s that kind of attitude that really makes Alicia, and all the members of our team, such a great group to be a part of.

If you have any questions related to buildings, grain systems, garage doors, or other construction needs, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services barndominium

Project Profile: Barndominium

At FS Construction Services we really do love a unique project. However, when you’ve been in the game as long as we have, you find that your tendency towards surprise diminishes somewhat as the years tick on. That’s why we were so excited when this project, lovingly called the  Barndominium, came our way.

You Need a Beautiful Barndominium

The idea was simple enough: tear down an existing structure, leave the basement, and build a luxury barndominium on top of it. What’s a barndominium? Well, stay tuned and you’ll find out.

The resulting building is an efficient 30’ x 40’ x 8’ and required the coordination of multiple companies and professionals to get across the finish line. The final product features seamless gutters and leaf-guards, a 3’ x 3’ cupola, an 8’ x 16’ x 8’ trimmed-out back porch, a 12’ x 24’ x 8’ trimmed-out front porch, custom bathroom and kitchen cabinets, cistern, septic, and plumbing systems, as well as amenities like a custom walk-in closet and a walk-in shower.

All said and done, this turnkey home packs a beautiful living space into a relatively small footprint. Attractive inside and out, this is one of the more exciting uses we’ve seen of existing property. To connect the old space with the new space, we constructed stairs and rails down into the basement, effectively merging the two living areas into one.

Not only was it a lot of fun to see this project come together, we had the opportunity to work alongside a number of other wonderful professionals and colleagues. It has been incredibly fulfilling to see all of that work and experience create something so unique and useful.

As always, we are here for any of your building needs or questions. Whether you are looking for steel, wood, or post-frame, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services garage door safety

Residential Garage Door Safety

When it comes to garage doors around here at FS Construction Services, we often sound like a broken record. Your garage door is an incredible functioning luxury you tend to forget about until it stops doing what it’s supposed to, and then it becomes a huge headache. So we thought we would provide you with some garage door safety suggestions and thoughts for keeping your door in good working order and keeping yourself and others safe around it.

Keep Your Door Working Well with Garage Door Safety Tips

Springs, Cables, and Tracks

A garage door has a lot of moving parts, and those parts work the same path and track over and over again. Your garage door stretches its springs every time it opens and closes, and the same principle is true for the door’s cables and tracks. That’s a lot of work over a week, a month, a year. Light maintenance like cleaning and lubrication can help keep things in proper order, but be sure to leave any repairs or major adjustments to the professionals. Doors are heavy and can cause serious injury if mishandled.

Emergency Release

Take a minute to familiarize yourself with your garage door’s emergency release mechanism. You will thank us if you do this now, and not when you’re fumbling around in the dark after the power goes out and you need to open the door.

Photosensors and Auto-Reverse

Two of the most basic safety features of a garage door are also two of its most important. The photosensors will prevent the door from closing on anything in the door’s path. Make sure they’re pointed in the right direction and clear of debris. The auto-reverse mechanism will reverse your door’s direction if it comes in contact with an object (i.e., a car, a pet, a person, etc.).

Push Buttons and Common Sense

Like we said, garage doors are heavy. While most garage doors, especially newer ones, come with a variety of safety features, nothing beats simple common sense. Keep your garage door openers and push buttons out of reach of children, or even accidental pressing. And more than anything, make sure you’re always out of the way of a moving door.

If you have any garage door questions, whether it’s maintenance related or you’re in the market for a new one, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

We have previously discussed Service Manager Jarret Herzog and Service and Sales Support specialist Nathan Bleem.
