New grain system FS Construction Services

Project Profile: 4,000 Bushel New Grain System

Here at FS Construction Services, we have worked in the agriculture world for so long that we have settled on that most basic principle of farming certainty: there is no certainty at all. And while it’s true that this has always been the case, there are some things that can be done about it, for example planning a new grain system.

New Grain System for the Future

Many farmers turn to utilizing their grain storage capabilities as a means to weather storms (literally and figuratively), wait for a better market, and deal with unexpected yields without worrying about waste. This was the case with a recent client who asked us to come help them add a little security and convenience to their operation.

After talking with the client about their needs, Nathan Koester and his team built a 7-ring tall, 18’ diameter storage bin with a capacity of 4,000 bushels. While it’s certainly not the largest project we’ve ever worked on, it was done in the interest of foresight and planning. This Brock structure was constructed as a surge tank and also features two 12” fans allowing our client to store their grain longer term if needed. That way, whether the mill is closed for the weekend, or our client needs to hang onto their grain for some other unforeseen reason, they have the capacity to hold the grain and keep it from spoiling in the process.

It’s a simple solution, but one that can pay out dividends in the future. And while it doesn’t control the weather or the market, it does add a little security for when the weather or the market are a little out of control.

grain bin storage FS Construction Services Sukup

Project Profile: Sukup Grain Bin Storage

We talk a lot about grain storage here at FS Construction Services. Keeping your grain protected and secure while you wait on the right time to sell seems like an easy enough idea to grasp in theory. But in practice, grain bin storage involves a high number of variables and requires a good structure and properly working equipment to ensure that the grain is at top quality when you need it most.

New Grain Bin Storage System

Over the years we have worked on countless grain bin sites adding new storage, updating equipment, helping farmers grow their capacity, and so on. The fact remains, no matter how big or how small a site is, there are some basic fundamentals that you can count on to give you the space and peace of mind you need for healthy grain.

This was the case recently when Nathan Koester and his team constructed a new grain system on the a client’s farm. The 42’ in diameter Sukup grain bin is 6-rings tall and has a capacity of 28,900 bushels. The bin also includes exterior stairs for safe roof access, a centrifugal fan to help with airflow and a powersweep.

While certainly not the largest site we’ve worked on, this job includes all of the basic fundamentals required for a successful operation. The new bin will provide our client with the space they need and the knowledge that their grain is secure, well treated, and ready for use at the ideal time.

If you are in need of adding more grain storage, or if you are in the market for grain drying or grain handling equipment, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. FS Construction Services small building site storage building

Project Profile: Storage Building on Small Building Site

Of all the many projects we get to work on here at FS Construction Services, there really are few things as satisfying as watching an empty space transform into a brand-new building in just a couple short weeks. Fortunately, this is something we get to see pretty often, and it’s always exciting to see how each new building owner will choose to utilize their new space. This was the case last year when we had the opportunity to turn a relatively small building site on a moderately steep grade into a functional, beautiful storage space for our client.

Making the Best of a Small Building Site

Tom Marcheski and his team got to work quickly to get our client up and running with their new structure. The 30’ x 32’ x 10’ building was constructed on a 10” x 48” foundation wall due to the grade of the build site. The building itself features a 6” thick concrete floor, an 8’ x 17’ x 10’ recessed porch, 3’ color-matched wainscotting around the bottom of the building, and a 9’ x 8’ Raynor Aspen series steel-backed, insulated door with a Raynor Pilot 8’ 1/2hp chain drive operator. The building also features four windows, a charcoal gray metal roof, gutters, and an attractive red with white trim appearance.

The strong structure matched with the metal roof and the well-insulated door will allow this building to stand strong for many years to come and effectively keep safe and weather-proof whatever the owner chooses to store inside.

If you are in need of a new wood, steel, or post-frame building, even if you have a potentially tricky build site, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services new building addition to existing building

Project Profile: Building Addition

When it comes to constructing a building that reaches its highest potential it’s necessary to have quality raw materials, solid construction, a good plan, and, perhaps surprisingly, a healthy dose of imagination. Sometimes the success of a building is in the littlest details, the clever additions, or the personal touches that make it feel less like “a building” and more like “my building.”

Building Addition to Existing Structure

At FS Construction Services, we have built enough structures to know that a specific approach, even to the most basic project, can make all the difference to a client.

This was the case late last year when we were asked to build an addition to an existing structure. While the interior of this project ended up with some unique features, we are going to focus on the exterior elements this month.

The first thing we had to do was match the 18’ x 46’ x 10’ 6” addition to the current building. The lean-to was posted onto a concrete slab and the exterior styling was matched with the original building, including the 18” overhangs all around.

This addition includes heated and cooled office space with lots of natural light as well as a garage for a wide range of storage needs. While we will get into it more next month, our team was able to include a number of unique features to provide our client with a space that not only serves their functional needs, but also feels like a space that is uniquely theirs.

If you are in need a new building, whether it’s wood or steel, or a new building addition, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services grain bin project in winter

Project Profile: Grain Bin Project in Winter

One of the realities of living in the Midwest is that you’re forever at the mercy of its temperamental seasons. Sure, there is the general pattern in which spring becomes summer becomes autumn becomes winter, but outside of those general guidelines, pretty much anything goes. And while we wouldn’t have it any other way, it’s also true that the work we do at FS Construction Services is often dependent upon some level of atmospheric cooperation, and this grain bin project certainly benefited from that.

Winter Cooperated for this Grain Bin Project

Now, it’s easy to think of this in only negative terms. Rain when it is supposed to be dry, cold when it is supposed to be warm, finally dry and warm but so windy anything not bolted down is in danger of becoming a kite. However, an occasional upside of this life is that sometimes you have a winter so comparatively temperate to previous years, that you can get a lot of work done. Such was the case earlier this year when we had a much easier time of building in January.

Our client was ready to start the year off with a preseason jump, and thanks to an obliging month, we were able to make that happen. Nathan Koester and his team quickly constructed a 36 ft. in diameter, 7-ring tall, Sukup grain bin with a capacity of 21,000 bushels. Additionally external stairs were added for safe and easy access, a horizonal power sweep was installed, and a centrifugal fan was added for quiet and efficient operation.

All in all, our client was ready to roll into spring with brand new grain storage and might not have even needed to brush the snow off of it. If you are in need of upgrading your grain storage, grain drying, or grain handling, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Grain bin preseason building FS Construction Services

Project Profile: Grain Bin Built in Preseason

Last winter was a bit of an unusual one. We imagine there were probably many disappointed children (and many relieved parents) when the promise of sledding simply couldn’t be fulfilled because there wasn’t much snow. However, we like to look at the positives here at FS Construction Services, and one of the upsides of our relatively snow-less winter was that it ended up being a great time for easier preseason building and allowed clients to get further ahead of the curve.

Preseason Building of Grain Bin Storage

This was the case for one of our clients last January who was in need of some additional grain storage. Thanks to some cooperative weather, we were able to quickly complete construction on a 6-ring tall, 30’ in diameter storage bin. This Sukup grain bin has a capacity of 14,000 bushels and also included two down augers, an incline unload head with power sweep, and finally an exterior staircase for safe and convenient access. When all was said and done, the new structure was built and our client was able to begin the year with the comfort of knowing plenty of storage would be available when needed.

While we can’t always guarantee smooth and calm weather, we can certainly proclaim the benefits of preseason building. Of course, we know that time and circumstance doesn’t always allow, but if you can plan ahead and schedule your grain storage, drying, or handling needs, you will set yourself up for less worry and trouble down the road when time and circumstance may not be so generous.

If you are in the market for new, additional, or updated grain systems, or any other type of building, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services new building addition

Project Profile: Monroe County Fairgrounds New Building Addition

Here at FS Construction Services we have a lot of experience building structures for a variety of different occupants. And while we find joy in all of our work, it is always an exciting day when we get to work on a job that’s just a little bit outside of what we normally do. Over the years we have constructed many buildings for farmers and farm equipment, for businesses and organizations, and for families in residential areas. And now we are happy to say that we can add goats to that list.

New Building Addition for Goats at Fair

Earlier this year we had the opportunity to build an addition to the existing goat barn at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. This addition is 18’ x 120’ x 12’ and has been styled and designed to match the existing structure and flow seamlessly into it. This addition not only matches visually, but also functionally. The pre-existing building was framed 10 feet above the ground, with wire fencing installed underneath, to allow for air circulation within the goat barn. We added a similar framing build to the addition to keep the airflow pathway open.

Additionally, we installed a 10’ x 10’ Raynor SteelForm S20 manually operated overhead door for consistent, easy access to the new addition.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that bring you the most joy in your work, and knowing that we were both able to help our friends at the fairgrounds and keep those goats cool and protected is certainly a joy we got to take away from this project.

If you are in need of a new building, or a new building addition, whether it’s for peoples, goats, or another species entirely, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services Additional Grain Storage

Project Profile: Additional Grain Storage for Returning Customer

As a consumer, one of the more stressful tasks can be finding the right place to do the job you need. Whether it’s an auto shop, an electrician, or just a new restaurant that you hope is good, we all want to make sure we can get the product we want, at a price that works, from a place we trust, including additional grain storage.

6,950 Bushels of Additional Grain Storage Before Harvest

And at FS Construction Services, we understand that value. And while we are grateful for all of our clients, there is a special feeling that comes when a first-time client becomes a return client. This was the case late last year when a customer who had been brand new in the year 2021 came back again with some additional storage needs.

Nathan Koester and his team were able to provide this new structure just in time for harvest to really pick up. They installed a 21’ Sukup hopper bin to function as a wet tank right next to a continuous flow dryer. This 5-ring tall bin has a capacity of 6,950 bushels. Additionally, our team added a fan for aeration during the drying season and to help with storage when moving into the winter season. We also installed a dual-use twin hopper gate, one going to the dryer and one for load out when the dryer isn’t needed. All in all, we had our return client up and running and ready to take on the thick of the season.

If you are in need of grain drying, grain storage, or grain handling equipment, whether you are a returning customer or have never contacted us before, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Wet holding tank grain systems FS Construction Services

Project Profile: New Wet Holding Tank

Here at FS Construction Services, we understand that at one time or another we have probably all had the experience of being midway through a project and suddenly realizing that we don’t actually have everything we need to finish. Needless to say it isn’t a great feeling. In the world of agriculture, even with the best of planning, there are times when you find yourself in a situation where you need something you didn’t have before. This was the case for a recent client of ours, who was right in the middle of the summer, staring down the harvest, and in need of a new wet holding tank.

Wet Holding Tank Just In Time for Harvest

Nathan Koester and his team were on it, and were able to quickly consult and construct a 25,000 bushel, 30’ wide wet holding tank for our client. This Sukup hopper bin has been designed to efficiently feed its attached grain dryer. In addition, we added a 12” 100’ double run. This compact, quiet, and smooth conveyer is known for being gentle on grain and requiring little maintenance. With these new pieces installed, our client was ready for the immediate harvest and the harvests to come.

When problems arise, there is no better time than right now to fix them. Of course, while that’s not possible in every situation, sometimes with a quick team and lots of experience, you can get pretty close.

If you are looking to get a jump on the upcoming season, or if you have been thinking about updating your grain drying, grain handling, or grain storage equipment, or if you have any other grain solution questions, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services strong columns machine storage

Project Profile: Strong Columns for Unmatched Space

At FS Construction Services we love an impressive feat of engineering. We work with so many construction materials so often that it’s genuinely exciting when someone comes along with a new and better way of doing something, including strong columns.

Superior Strength Columns Support Massive Space

For the past few months, we have been discussing the pork farm machine storage project we recently completed, which was a massive 81’ x 200’ x 20’ agricultural building. The project included a variety of highlights and features that we have since been breaking down in further detail.

Perhaps one of the most impressive things about this project is just how big the building is. Yet for all of its size, the interior of the structure is one giant, clear span of uninterrupted space. So we thought we would spend some time discussing how those big spans are achieved and how a building of this size can be constructed to last the test of time.

Our partners at Walters Buildings have used their in-house engineering team to create columns of superior strength in every way. These 3-ply columns utilize their Shear Transfer Plate technology which increases the load capacity of each column, essentially making them twice as strong as a solid 6×6 post. These columns were then fastened to the concrete foundation with L brackets, securing them in place along the entire length of the building.

The end result is a huge building that can easily accommodate large machinery while withstanding the wind, rain, and snow. If you are in the market for a new building, even if it’s not an 81’ x 200’ behemoth, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.
