FS Construction Services steel building winter maintenance tips

Six Tips to Winter-Proof your Steel Building

Like it or not, we are quickly approaching cold months ahead. But here at FS Construction Services, we are all about the long game. So we always advocate a little more effort here to save you a lot of trouble down the road. One way to do this is to perform some basic maintenance on your steel buildings before winter settles in. So here are six tips to protect your steel building from winter damage.

Pre-Winter Steel Building Maintenance Tips

Timing Matters

While we get that no one wants to take time out of their day to inspect their building for things that could go wrong, we certainly know that no one wants to inspect their building in the winter for things that have gone wrong. So perform your maintenance now, while you’ve got more light in the day and don’t need a heavy coat.

Check for Overgrowth

Check for trees, branches, or bushes that may hang over or grow up against your building. When the winter winds blow, you don’t want anything of these scratching your walls or your roof. Also trim any branches that could accumulate snow and break off onto your building.

Clear Debris

Check your building’s roof and remove leaves, sticks, dirt, or any other kind of debris. These materials can hold water and eventually cause problems if they’re sitting on your roof for too long. Additionally, these sorts of things tend to gather or get to stuck around screwheads and can cause corrosion.

Give it a Scrub

Mix a household cleaner with some water and give your building a gentle clean. Rinse any remaining cleaner off when you’re done.

Seal Check

When you’re inspecting your building for cracks or corrosion, be sure to check seals around vents, windows, skylights, and doors. Also check the flashing around chimneys and pipes.

A little goes a long way, so be sure to keep up on your building maintenance and save yourself the future headaches. Building You the Best: From Inside to Outside Customized Buildings

Here at FS Construction Services, we have spent the past couple months talking about the various benefits and uses associated with steel and wood customized buildings. Throughout these articles we have often discussed just how customizable these buildings are. But we wanted to take a closer look at what that customization means, from the inside out. At the end of the day, our job is to build you the building that gives you exactly what you need and does away with anything you don’t.

The Best in Steel or Wood Customized Buildings

When working with us to design your building, you will have a number of choices. Some of them are pretty obvious, like: how many windows, how big should the doors be, what color do I want the exterior to be, etc. However, the possibilities can really go on and on. For instance, perhaps you need a machine storage building but you want to save some money and time and go with a dirt floor instead of a concrete pad. Not a problem. Perhaps you haven’t decided exactly how you’re going to utilize your building’s interior so you want to leave it unfinished until a later time.

Perhaps you only want half of it finished. The point is, we will work to give you the building you need for the present and the one you’ll want for the future. Whether that comes with a rugged dirt floor or a buildout for future office space, the choice is up to you.

If you are in process of thinking what a new building could be for you, or if you have any questions at all about our steel or wood building options, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services extreme weather steel buildings

Withstand Extreme Weather with a Steel Building

Living in the Midwest, we at FS Construction Services are no strangers to extreme weather. Boiling hot one minute, downpouring the next, and a feeling that we’re never quite safe from the snow, our four seasons put us, and our clients, through the ringer, year after year. And while there’s no way to control, or even reliably predict it, there are ways to stay prepared for it all – rain, snow, or drought.

Steel Buildings Hold Up During All Types of Weather

Of the many types of structures we get to work with, few are as strong or as durable as a steel building. With an incredible strength-to-weight ratio, a steel building is ideally designed to withstand the ebbs and flows of extreme weather and the many inconveniences and misfortunes that can come with it. And our partners at Butler and Sukup Manufacturing have made names for themselves with their strong, customizable, multi-use steel buildings.

The materials used in a pre-engineered steel building can be rated for your area’s wind, load, and impact needs. Additionally, steel buildings have been proven to hold up better to fire and even earthquakes than other types of buildings. To stay warm, a variety of insulation types and thicknesses are available to make your space comfortable even in the coldest months. Galvanized or coated steel will not only withstand corrosion and rust, but steel isn’t susceptible to rot and pests like wood can be, meaning it’s able to hold up to forces both without and within. Extreme weather with a steel building can be withstood.

Obviously, no structure is perfect, but a steel building will get you about as prepared as you possibly can be for to weather whatever storm or stress may come. If you are interested in a steel building, or if you have any questions at all, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. FS Construction Services machine storage

Project Profile: 8,640 sq. ft. of Machine Storage

At FS Construction Services, we know that sometimes you just need to store something really big without having to worry about accidentally destroying your building in the process. It’s a simple concept for sure, but building proper machine storage is no joke. Whether it’s agricultural equipment or boats or a variety of other possibilities, when it comes to machine storage, you need something that is as rugged as the machines themselves. And perhaps most importantly of all, you need something that’s big, with a wide, clear span.

Building You the Best Machine Storage

This was the case for a recent client who needed, more than anything, as much storage space as possible without much fuss. Tom Marcheski and his team stepped in and built a huge 72’ x 120’ x 16’ building with a wide-open interior for anything the client would need to store there. In order to make the structure as convenient and easy-to-maintain as possible, we also installed an extra row of splashboards, an 18-inch overhang on the left endwall, and seamless gutters. Additionally, our team put skylights into the roof for improved lighting and installed a Dripstop condensation prevention system to keep moisture from dripping down from the metal roof onto the equipment below. To make things as accessible as possible for the client, we also installed a 36’ x 16’ sliding door system, a 30’ x 16’ sliding door system, and a standard-sized door.

The importance of a building that just works can never be overstated. If you are in the market for machine or agricultural storage or any other kind of residential or commercial building, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Before and After New Storage Building

Project Profile: Building Fire Provides Chance for a New Start

We’ve been around long enough here at FS Construction Services to know that sometimes, no matter how well you plan and how careful you are, sometimes life just happens. It’s easy to forget and usually unpleasant to remember, but you never really know just what a day will bring. A client of ours had this unfortunate reminder recently, when their storage building caught fire and was destroyed.

New Walters Buildings Storage Facility

The temptation to give up after a setback like this is strong, but our client pushed forward and decided to rebuild what they lost. After having the old, ruined structure torn down, Tom Marcheski and his team came in to construct a brand-new storage building on the existing concrete pad.

The new building, a 45’ x 82’ x 16’ beige and forest green Walters structure, was built in just over a week. The building features a 24’ x 16’ double sliding door and a 12’ x 10’ single sliding door, meaning our client will be able to move and store any amount of equipment and machinery with ease.

While trouble often comes at unexpected times in unexpected ways, it doesn’t always mean that there can’t also be some good to come along with it. And while we’re sure our clients would rather have never had their storage shed burn down to begin with, they have made the best of a bad situation, and now they have a huge, new, sturdy and efficient structure that’s designed to last them for decades to come.

Metal roofing metal siding barn renovation

Project Profile: Old Barn Made New with Metal Roofing and Siding

Sometimes a building can stand out for all the wrong reasons. Some buildings are a little old looking, some buildings are falling apart and need to be torn down. And sometimes, a building is just a little dated and needs some attention and care. It’s tempting in these cases to want to tear down and start again, and sometimes that’s the right call. However, at FS Construction Services we have experienced again and again how refurbishing an older, solid structure, can be a better allocation of funds. There are a number of these types of buildings whose life expectancy can be greatly extended.

This was the case for Tom Marcheski and his team when they recently remodeled an old barn that was by no means dilapidated, but greatly benefited from some work and attention. The old roof and siding were replaced with Fabral’s Strongclad galvanized-steel panels, which not only dramatically improved the look of the barn, it added Class A fire resistance and Class 4 hail impact resistance.

This new covering, on the sides and on the roof, is not only cheaper than a whole new building, it will provide incredible strength and durability for many years to come, breathing new life into an older structure, and providing the perfect solution for a building that’s meant to be a little rugged.

Finally, our team of construction professionals outfitted this newly renovated building with a guttering system. This addition will help to divert any rains away from the building thus helping to keep the floor dry and eliminate standing water around the building.

We understand that agricultural equipment and structures need to be able to endure some hard treatment and even harder weather. From grain systems to steel buildings to metal roofs and even paint that won’t fade, Gateway FS Construction Services can help. You can give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.
