FS Construction Services Fourth of July

Finding the Celebration this Fourth of July

It’s no stretch to say that this year has been unlike any other that has come before. For many, it has been difficult, stressful, and if nothing else, strange. For many, it has been a time of waiting, and counting the days until it might all be past. But in the midst of all that waiting, life continues to move forward, including the Fourth of July, and we move with it.

Holidays are often times to slow down, take stock, and consider the previous year. It’s easy to imagine that many of us will be doing that this year, whether we are with family, friends, or by ourselves. There will be a lot to think about, perhaps most of all, how much everything has changed. And yet, despite the year’s struggles, despite the new rules and disruptions that have been added to our daily lives, despite the pain you or your loved ones may have gone through in the process, we hope that there will still be some cause for celebration. Even if it’s a different kind of celebration than we’re used to.

At FS Construction Services, we are grateful for the family, friends, and clients we get to live with, work with, and serve alongside every day. We celebrate the time that we have had and we celebrate the time that we will have. We know with some strength and some grit we will persevere and see better days. And we believe that too is a cause for celebration.

As always, you can reach out to us for any buildinggrain systemseed systemroofinggarage door, or other service needs. We are always happy to work with our clients on finding the best possible solutions, whether it’s a complex job or a simple task, and we’re happy to answer questions and troubleshoot problems when they arise. Pre-Season Maintenance in an Uncertain Season

This has been a strange year so far to say the least. And with schools, many businesses, and social gatherings on hold for much of the spring, it has felt at times like the world has stopped spinning. But, of course, we know that isn’t the case. The temperatures will continue to go up and the rains will come and the crops will grow. Farmers can’t put their season on hold for a few months and pick it back up again, and so, like always, they must go on, including pre-season maintenance.

However the season may look for you, the fact remains that farming is a hard job, and farming equipment has to stand up to a bit of a beating each year. At FS Construction Services, we know that the wear and tear adds up, and few things are more disastrous than your grain system breaking down on you in the thick of harvest. Unfortunately, these things don’t come with a check engine light, but there are a number of signs that can tell you it’s time for a little pre-season TLC.

Grain System Maintenance Tips

Here are a few indicators that your grain bin might need a little pre-season maintenance.

  • Excess dirt and debris. Look especially close around roof panels, vents, and connections
  • Moisture buildup. Check manholes, caps, and any other opening to make sure everything is sealing properly
  • Unsafe electrical connections. Make sure your wiring is secure and not weathered or damaged
  • Loose anchor bolts. Tighten anything that’s loose and see if the foundation is still level
  • Rust, old grain, other junk. While you’ve still got some time and an empty bin, make sure it’s clean and free of things that could cause rot

Now most of these are pretty obvious tasks that most people are going to be able to perform on their own. But if you’re working with some older equipment or it’s been a while since you’ve had work done on your grain dryer or you’re just the better-safe-than-sorry type, you can let us know. We’ll send a trained technician out to you to perform an inspection on your dryer. Specifically, our techs look at six key areas:

  1. Burners
  2. Fan housing and blades for dirt buildup
  3. Belts for wear
  4. Bearings
  5. Electrical controls and switches
  6. Gas pressure regulators and LP gas vaporizers

It is a little bit of time and money, but we’ve seen time and time again how a little bit now can save a lot in the future. If you would like to schedule an inspection, or if you would like to browse our selection of stir dryers, counter mix-flow dryers, or counter-flow dryers, let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Gateway FS Construction Services crop yield

2019 Crop Yield Stats Show Perseverance

For many people, 2019 now probably feels like it was four years ago and not four months ago. But if you can remember back to earlier in the year there was another big, but different, problem we were all trying to sort through: rain. In fact, the first six months of 2019 were the wettest on record for the state of Illinois. And of course, a record-breaking wet season leads to another record no one wants, prevented plantings.

According to an article in FarmWeek, “Crop plantings in Illinois last season totaled just 10.5 million acres of corn, down 5% from 2018, and 9.95 million acres of soybeans, down 8%.” One of the more remarkable stats pulled from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is that it took until June 4 for progress on corn planting to reach 50%. Naturally, it’s just not possible to be that delayed on planting and not experience a reduction in yields, which is exactly what happened. Soybeans faired a little better than corn at 9.5 bushels per acre off the previous year’s count to corn’s 29 bushels per acre difference.

And yet, the article goes on to say, with record rain and drastically-delayed planting, the yields, though down, were surprisingly strong all things considered. Illinois still went on to lead the nation in soybean production. As for our specific neck of the woods, Washington county pulled in the highest corn yield on average at 167.4 bushels per acre, and Monroe had the highest average soybean yield at 47.2. These totals sit a little lower than the state average 181 for corn and 54 for soybeans.

And yet, thinking back to last year, when it seemed like the ground just couldn’t take any more and almost every field looked like a lake, it’s amazing these numbers are as high as they are. If there’s anything to take from all this, besides some interesting numbers, it’s that we know how to weather the storms, which will always come in some form or other. So many of our friends, neighbors, and clients simply continue to persevere, no matter how dire things look. And sometimes, even after record-breaking storms, things can turn out alright after all.

As always, we are here for any of your building, grain system, seed system, and garage door needs. If you need anything at all, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Seed Systems: What FS Construction Can Do For You

Farming is a broad word and will probably bring a lot of different images to mind depending on the person. And while it’s true that as long as there have been people, there have been farmers, farming also lives on the cutting edge of technological innovation. This is perhaps nowhere more apparent than in the world of seed treatment. And while coating seeds to boost their chance of success isn’t necessarily new, the precision and automation with which it’s now done is truly remarkable.

When it comes to something like seed treatment, consistency and reliability is key. The fastest or biggest treatment system in the world is no good if it doesn’t produce dependable results. It’s important enough that we’ve partnered with some of the best seed treatment system manufacturers in the industry: USC, Meridian Manufacturing, and Schuld/Bushnell, so we can guarantee our customers get the product and the results they’re looking for. From tabletop to larger capacity to commercial options to portable treaters, we’ve got every shape and size of treater you might need.

As automation has become more sophisticated, so have we. Most sites we work on now involve setting up automated seed treatment systems, which is crucial to getting consistent results time and time again. Justen Kempfer, our Seed Treatment specialist, works closely with clients when setting up a new system to make sure they’re fully trained and comfortable with whatever automation system they’re working with.

Of course, with any kind of machinery, there’s no way around the occasional maintenance. Sometimes it’s just a preseason checkup and other times it’s an upgrade or a piece that needs to be retrofitted. Whatever the issue may be, FS Construction Services is here to help.

From choosing the right product, to installation, to calibration, to training, to maintenance, we are with you every step of the way when it comes to your seed treatment system. If you are in need of some new equipment, or you just have a few questions, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

FS Construction Services fall maintenance

Preventing Winter Emergencies with Fall Maintenance

With the days already getting shorter and (occasionally) cooler, as sudden as ever, summer is has ended and fall has begun. And while there’s always the hope of a couple of calm, temperate autumn months, winter usually shows up sooner than anyone wants. It’s all too easy to overestimate the amount of time you have left until the real cold starts and all too common to leave winter-preparation maintenance tasks undone once it does.

It really doesn’t take long to come up with around-the-house work to do before winter:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts
  • Seal gaps and cracks in windows and doors
  • Repair damaged or corroded roof shingles and flashing
  • Drain outdoor faucets, hoses, and irrigation systems
  • Inspect heating systems and furnaces, cleaning and replacing filters when necessary
  • Have all gas equipment inspected
  • Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

And of course, this list could go on and on. The truth is that any of the aforementioned residential maintenance projects also apply to agricultural and commercial properties as well, albeit usually with a lot more time and effort involved. Grain bins, seed systems, storage sheds, post-frame buildings, and more, all need the same kind of attention and work to ensure they not only last the winter months, but are ready for use come spring as well. We all know winter is hard on buildings, and even small things like trapped water or gaps along windows can wreak havoc if not tended to.

If you are in need of some help getting your grain storage or transfer equipment, buildings, seed systems, or more ready for the months to come, please let Gateway FS Construction Services know. Give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Gateway FS Construction Services harvest safety tips

Safety Reminders for Harvest

It’s no secret that harvest time is a busy season for farmers. No matter how prepared you are, there bound to be some long days and long nights. At FS Construction Services, we understand the desire to get just one more thing done before calling it day, we also understand just how incredibly important farmers are. So, because it’s really in everyone’s best interest, we’ve put together a quick list of safety reminders to keep in mind if you’re going to be out there this harvest.

  1. Get Rest. We know there are going to be sometimes when a full night’s sleep just isn’t going to happen. So make sure you take the necessary steps to keep yourself as rested an energized as possible. Drink lots of water, and, if you’re going to be away from home for long stretches at a time, bring snacks. If you can’t give your body the sleep it needs, be sure to give it the food and nutrition it needs to carry you through.
  2. Take Breaks. Give yourself a fifteen-minute break from time to time. Again, we know much of harvest season is one giant time crunch, but as best as you can, plan ahead and carve out a little time for yourself here and there, especially if you’re going to spend long hours alone.
  3. Keep in Touch. Speaking of being alone, make sure someone knows where you plan to be throughout the day and keep them updated or ask them to check in on you.
  4. First Aid Kid. No one likes to think about it, but accidents do happen. Keep a first-aid kid in as many vehicles as you can, just in case. The Mayo Clinic also recommends having a tourniquet on hand as well, just in case an injury does happen and you are alone or far from help.
  5. Preventative Maintenance. Check the state of your equipment regularly. Clean, well-maintained equipment is far more predictable and safe than the opposite. For more information, take a look at our recent preventative maintenance blogs.

As obvious as these are, we all know how easy it can be to want to cut corners or push ourselves a little too hard in high-stress times. Please take care of yourselves this harvest, and we wish you a successful season. As always, if you have grain storage and handling or seed treatment needs or questions, please feel free to reach out to Gateway FS Construction Services. You can give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Gateway FS Seed Systems preventative maintenance

Seed System Preventative Maintenance #3: Call Us in a Crunch

Well, summer is over and we are in the middle of harvest season. We hope that you were able to get any seed system maintenance you needed taken care of and it’s all smooth sailing from here on out. However, we know that, despite all the best efforts and intentions, sometimes things just go wrong. To help out, here is our third and final round of FS Construction Service’s preventative maintenance articles for your seed treatment system.

While technology is amazing, and seed treatment has become an art of repeatable, computational precision, there are always going to be things that are simply out of our hands. We’ve been in the game long enough to know we have to respect, and be prepared for, the unpredictable. So we’ve come up with a few ways that we can be as ready as possible should a problem with your seed treater arise.

  1. We keep ourselves well stocked with a vast number of different parts. Sometimes the smallest thing can cause the biggest problems, so we keep a lot of seed system replacement parts on hand in case of an emergency.
  2. We have a dedicated USC technician on staff. He knows this equipment inside and out and is quick to not only diagnose a problem but pinpoint its solution as well.
  3. We focus on service. We make it a point to get to our customers as quickly as possible, so they can be up and running as soon as possible.

All of these things came into play recently when a pump board when out on a seed treater in Kentucky. The cause: not a faulty part or bad operation, but a power surge thanks to a lightning strike. To ensure our client could get back to work quickly, our service technician met him halfway with the needed replacement, so he could get his system running again within the day.

We’ve been doing this long enough to know that it always pays to be prepared. Whether you’re getting your system checked and cleaned before harvest, or you find yourself in a sudden bind, we are there for you. We hope this series on preventative maintenance has been helpful, and as always, if you have any questions about our seed system services, please feel free to reach out to Gateway FS Construction Services. You can give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

Gateway FS Construction Services grain systems preventative maintenance

Preventative Maintenance #3: General Grain System Maintenance

Here we are, at the third and final installment of our FS Construction Service’s preventative maintenance articles. That also means that summer is long gone, and we are now all the way in on harvest season. While we have previously discussed grain drying, storage bin, and bucket elevator maintenance, we are going to finish by going over some general preventative maintenance points.

First off, at FS Construction Services our goal is always to help our customers. When it to comes grain systems, there are lots of things that can go wrong or prevent your system from working the way it should. We always suggest, in the event of improperly working or broken equipment, that you give us a call first. There are certain problems and instances where we are able to guide our customers over the phone to help them fix the issue themselves, which saves them both time and money. While we are happy to replace parts and/or equipment, we are happiest with satisfied customers.

We have professionals on staff who deal with both mechanical and electrical issues when it comes to grain systems maintenance and support. Regardless of your issue, our goal is to keep any down time to a minimum. For instance, here are a few scenarios we’ve recently encountered.

  1. We conduct maintenance on a number of stirring machines made as far back as the 1960s which are still in use, but, unsurprisingly, they’re a little different from the modern machines. However, we are able to both fix and/or retrofit these old machines to get them working like new.
  2. Another issue we deal with is covering or overfilling the stirrer with grain. It’s tempting, we know, to try and get as much done in one go as possible, but it can cause some major headaches down the road.

So whether you’ve run into one of the issues above, or have had an entirely different set of problems with your grain system, please feel free to reach out to Gateway FS Construction Services. You can give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.

USC Seed Systems Preventative Maintenance Blog: 2 of 3: Increase Accuracy and Save Money

Welcome to the second round of FS Construction Service’s seed system preventative maintenance articles. Like we said before, a little maintenance can go a long way when it comes to keeping your seed treatment systems effective and operational, and our goal is to give you the information you need to keep your equipment in the best shape. What follows is a description of the service you receive when an FS service professional comes out to take your seed system through the preventative maintenance process.

One of the wonderful things about seed treatment systems is their precision. Knowing that you can program and produce an identical dressing for seed year after year that can be applied consistently and evenly each time brings with it some serious peace of mind. However, none of that happens by accident. Thanks to the advancement in seed system technology and automation, the margin for error has decreased significantly. Obviously, automatic systems sound wonderful, but it’s also no surprise that we have found there are a number of manual seed systems still out there.

Brand-new equipment is expensive, we get that. That’s why our Seed Treating Solutions experts retrofit older treaters with automation upgrades. Our team can perform recommended maintenance and upgrades on any USC treater to turn previously manual processes to automatic processes. Most commonly what this means is that we will add a seed wheel system to keep you at your desired rate of flow and level of seed treatment. However, there are other simple ways to upgrade additional processes that are not only low cost, but can increase the accuracy of your system’s chemical delivery by 99.95%.

So, if you’re still using a manual seed system and aren’t yet ready for a whole system upgrade, let FS Construction Services know. We can inspect your equipment and determine ways we can make your job easier and your product more consistent.

To schedule maintenance, or get answers about maintaining or upgrading your seed system, reach out to Gateway FS Construction Services. You can give us a call at 866-551-3454, and let our specialists help you find exactly what you are looking for. We look forward to providing you the best customer service experience.
